Muay Thai literally translates to “Thai Boxing”, but is also referred to as “the art of the eight limbs”. Muay Thai is kickboxing, but differs from American-style kickboxing because of the use knee and elbow strikes in addition to punches and kicks. Muay Thai also differs from Karate-like martial arts because Muay Thai kicks generate massive amounts of power from full rotation of the hips and deliver the power to the shin, rather than kicking with the top of the foot (which is much more susceptible to injury). Muay Thai is one of the preferred striking arts in Mixed Martial Arts because of its efficient and very effective techniques.

The Muay Thai class at Ruffhouse Jiu Jitsu Mesa usually beings with a warm up such as jumping rope. After which the instructor will demonstrate a technique, and the student will pick a partner and take turns learning the technique by hitting pads. During this training time the instructor will come around and help the students. After several minutes you’ll come back for a new technique. The class usually finishes with some kind of conditioning drills.

Of course beginners are always welcome in any of our classes, but be forewarned this class is designed to push you and is cardio intensive so come prepared to train hard!
